Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, also called sweet air or laughing gas, is a mild, inhaled sedative and analgesic. It is delivered via a comfortable mask. It induces a state of enhanced relaxation and mild euphoria. Nitrous oxide is fast acting, with relaxation effects that begin within two to three minutes.

This is a great option for anxious or highly pain-sensitive patients. When treatment is complete, oxygen is used to neutralize the nitrous oxide, so there are no lingering effects. You will be fully alert, and able to drive if you wish, when you leave our office.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is administered in the form of a single pill that you’ll take either when you arrive at our office, or before your appointment. If taken before, plan to have a friend or trusted family member drop you off. Within 30 minutes to an hour, you’ll feel the effects of the sedation kick in, helping ease your worries and make your body feel more relaxed. Because the medication can linger for up to eight hours within the body, you’ll also need to have someone pick you up from your appointment.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Sedation dentistry is one of the safest treatments available when administered by trained professionals like Dr. Lee and Dr. Hachem. We take every precaution to ensure your health and safety during your visit. Before treatment, we’ll review your medical history, current medications, and any potential allergies to choose the option that will make you feel the most comfortable.

Whether you're receiving nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV, you'll be closely monitored throughout the procedure. As trusted sedation dentists in San Antonio, our team is experienced in helping patients relax while maintaining their safety.

What Does it Feel Like to Be Sedated at the Dentist?

The sensation you’ll feel depends on the type of sedation used and your personal physiology. But, overall, you’ll feel calm, relaxed, and less aware of your surroundings. With nitrous oxide, you may feel light or slightly tingly. Oral sedation tends to create a drowsy, “just woke up” kind of feeling. IV sedation is like oral medication, but stronger. Many patients even doze off during the procedure!

No matter which form your treatment takes, you’ll remain conscious and able to respond, but dental anxiety and discomfort will seemingly melt away. At Orbis Dental Group, we tailor the sedation experience to your needs, so you feel at ease from start to finish.

Is Sedation Dentistry Covered by Insurance?

Sedation dentistry may be partially covered by your insurance, but it depends entirely on your provider and the reason for sedation. If it’s deemed medically necessary, for example, due to a physical or behavioral impairment or a complex procedure, your plan might cover part of the cost.

However, for elective sedation, coverage is less common. At our practice, we’ll help you review your benefits, explore financing and in-house options, and make sure there are no surprise costs. If you're looking for a sedation dentist in San Antonio, our team is happy to provide a stress-free experience, no matter what your budget is.

Is Sedation Dentistry Worth It?

For many patients, absolutely! Sedation dentistry can take an otherwise overwhelming experience and turn it into a manageable, or even pleasant one. This is especially true for patients with dental anxiety, strong gag reflexes, or difficulty sitting still. Sedation also allows your dentist to complete more work in fewer visits, saving you time and stress.

At Orbis Dental Group, we’ve seen how sedation helps patients reclaim their oral health with confidence. If fear has kept you away from the dentist, sedation might be the key to unlocking your best and brightest smile.
